An arborist, less frequently referred to as an arboriculturist, is a profession that involves the cultivation, management, and study of the various wood plants, including trees, shrubs, vines and other perennials. Arborists usually focus on individual or small groups of plants, as opposed to forestry which manages an entire forest.
To become a Certified Arborist (CA) in the U.S., one must have at least years' of full-time and documented experience as a tree care professional. In addition, there is an extensive written test that must be taken and passed from the International Society of Arboriculture. 
There are 200 questions in the Certified Arborist exam that cover a wide range of subjects, including:

 

• Tree preservation
• Tree biology, identification and selection
• Tree-soil-water relations, tree nutrition and fertilization
• Tree planting and establishment
• Pruning concepts and techniques
• Cabling, bracing and lightning protection
• Problem diagnosis, risk assessment and management 
• Climbing and safe work practices, and tree. 

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has recently added specialty certifications. For instance, a Utility Specialist is someone who maintains vegetation in close proximity of electric utility wires.

 

The Arborist Certification Program is voluntary but knowing that the tree care company you hire has professionals who are certified gives you confidence that they will meet and exceed your expectations.
